WARWICK – Condor Airlines, a German airline in operation since 1955, announced Tuesday that it was initiating service between T.F. Green Airport and Frankfurt International Airport on June 18, 2015.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at T.F. Green, which is in the middle of a $110 million investment by the federal government to upgrade the airport, including extending the main runway to accommodate long-haul aircraft.
The R.I. Airport Corporation has been working to establish new service to Europe for some time, and the agreement with Condor is the first of its efforts to bear fruit.
?“I am pleased to help welcome Condor Airlines to T.F. Green starting next summer,” said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, a member of the Appropriations Committee who helped direct the federal investment to upgrade T.F. Green. “Our continued investment in modernizing T.F. Green and extending the runway is key to helping attract new business, jobs, and tourism to Rhode Island.”
Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee added that “Germans rank as one of the top inbound visitors to Rhode Island, and this new service will make it easier for them to travel to our great state.”
The airline, which is part of the Thomas Cook Group, plans to operate two roundtrip flights per week, on Mondays and Thursdays, adding that the flights are open for booking immediately. The announcement was part of a national expansion strategy. At the same time, Condor announced the opening of service to Portland, Ore. The airline already serves Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, Baltimore/Washington, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Seattle.
“The USA has so much more to offer than just California, New York and Florida. Rhode Island is a very special destination for our customers,” said Jens Boyd, head of long haul at Thomas Cook Group Airlines. “The new Condor flights offer the best access to New England’s tourist highlights such as the beaches of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The metropolis of Boston is less than an hour’s drive away.”
The service will be on Boeing 767-300 planes with 259 seats, of which 18 will be in business class and 35 in premium economy class. On the company website, prices for a one-way economy class ticket are expected to start at 339.99 euros ($446.50), rising to 399.99 euros ($525.29) for premium economy class and 749.99 euros ($984.94) for business class.
“Today marks a milestone for the airport as this is the first time we are able to offer non-stop scheduled international service to greater Europe and connecting destinations,” said Kelly Fredericks, president and CEO of the R.I. Airport Corporation that manages and operates T.F. Green Airport.
