T.F. Green passenger traffic hits 3.8 million in 2013

WARWICK – Passenger traffic at T.F. Green Airport in 2013 rose 4.2 percent compared with the previous year, up to 3.8 million total passengers from 3.65 million in 2012, according to numbers released by the R.I. Airport Corporation Tuesday.

Airport traffic for the month of December also saw an increase over the same period in 2012. T.F. Green’s 303,740 total passengers in December constituted a 5 percent jump from the December 2012 figure of 289,324.

Cargo enplaned and deplaned at T.F. Green in 2013 totaled 26.3 million pounds, an 8.6 percent increase compared with 24.2 million pounds in 2012. In December alone, the airport transported roughly 2.68 million pounds of cargo, a gain of 0.25 percent on the 2.67 million pounds in December 2012.

The five airlines with the greatest share of T.F. Green’s passenger traffic in 2013 were Southwest Airlines, at 45.1 percent; US Airways, at 23 percent; Delta Airlines, at 13.3 percent; United Airlines, at 11.4 percent; and JetBlue Airways, at 6.4 percent.

JetBlue, which began its flight service at T.F. Green Airport in November 2012, consequently reported a 928.8 percent increase in passenger traffic in 2013 compared with the previous year.

Besides JetBlue, Delta was the only major airline to register a year-over-year increase in passengers for the 12 months of 2013, with a 16 percent increase over 2012. United passenger traffic dropped 6.8 percent, US Airways dropped 5.5 percent and Southwest dropped 3.7 percent.

For the month of December, the airlines made a better showing, with United’s 44.6 percent year-over-year increase in total passengers the largest for the month. Delta’s passenger traffic increased 42.2 percent, while US Airways rose 19.4 percent and Southwest rose 1.4 percent. JetBlue was the only major airline to report a year-over-year decline in passenger traffic in December, falling 11.2 percent.

In 2013, 74,193 aircraft departed from or landed at T.F. Green airport.
