WARWICK – The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a $20.85 million grant to T.F. Green Airport for the next phase of its ongoing runway relocation project, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Thursday.

In 2011, the FAA approved plans for T. F. Green to extend its primary runway, Runway 5-23, by 1,530 feet to a total length of 8,700 feet. The longer runway is designed to allow for larger, heavier planes capable of nonstop flights to the West Coast and internationally.

As part of the project, the airport is also expanding the runway safety area on the Runway 16-34. The latest $20.85 million installment of FAA funding will support Phase V of the project, which includes mitigation costs to meet R.I. Department of Environmental Management requirements, according to a release from Reed’s office.

“T.F. Green is vital to our state’s economy and upgrading the airport and expanding the runway are smart investments that will help attract new business and jobs to Rhode Island,” said Reed, who chairs the Senate Interior Appropriations Committee that approves federal funding for government agencies such as the FAA. “This is another positive step toward modernizing T.F. Green and better positioning the state to compete.”

In addition to the safety improvements on the runways, the airport is also currently constructing a multimillion dollar de-icing containment facility and processing plant, funded in part through a loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, the release stated.

  1. good news. Perhaps the airlines will start supporting T.F. Green as they have Bradley! BDL has added n/s to LAX and will add a Houston n/s in November. SW also added Atlanta service and Jet Blue is adding Washington, D.C. service in June.
