TAUNTON – The Taunton City Council has approved a deal with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe that would pay the city more than $13 million a year if the tribe gets the approval it needs to build a casino in the city, according to the Standard-Times.

The vote was six to one in favor of the deal, with the president of the City Council and one other member abstaining because of potential conflicts of interest.

Council Member David Pottier voted against the Wampanoag deal, citing too many unanswered questions. Pottier told the news source that he was concerned that the deal did not include escalation of payments based on inflation.

The vote is a major step in the tribe’s bid to build a $500 million casino and hotel complex on 145 acres in Taunton’s Liberty and Union Industrial Park.

Taunton citizens will vote on the issue on June 9, according to the Standard-Times.
