More than 400 attend grand opening at Tockwotton

EAST PROVIDENCE – More than 400 people attended the grand opening of Tockwotton on the Waterfront on Feb. 15, the new $52.3 million, 156-room assisted living and nursing care residence along the waterfront on the Providence River.

Among the dignitaries attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Sen. Jack Reed, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts, Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, state Sen. Daniel DaPonte, state Rep. Helio Melo and East Providence Mayor James A. Briden.

Also featured was Beatrice Coleman, a 108-year-old Tockwotton resident.

The new facility, which opened in January, provides residents with a better quality of life, featuring individual apartments, private bathrooms, a fitness room, and a state-of-the-art silent nurse call system, according to Kevin McKay, Tockwotton’s executive director.

“Tockwotton is the most innovative senior community in Rhode Island,” McKay said.

The non-profit Tockwotton community has been serving seniors in the Greater Providence area since 1856. The new facility features assisted living and memory care, rehabilitation and skilled nursing care in a home-like setting.

The former Tockwotton building on the East Side of Providence is now up for sale through Cushman & Wakefield.
