PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island collected $17.19 million in back taxes under this fall’s recently-concluded tax amnesty program, the R.I. Department of Revenue said Wednesday.

The collections exceeded the $10.94 million in revenue estimated in the fiscal 2013 budget that started July 1. The proceeds also exceeded the $9.88 million collected during the last amnesty program in 2006.

“We’re delighted that so many taxpayers took advantage of this opportunity to clean their slates and get a fresh start,” said state Tax Administrator David M. Sullivan in a news release.

There were 6,650 applicants for the amnesty under the program that ran from Sept. 2 through Nov. 15. The amnesty program waived penalties and reduced interest on back taxes by 25 percent.

The taxes collected were:

  • Personal income tax: $5,803,001

  • Public service corporation tax $ 4,624,287

  • Sales and use tax $ 3,620,545

  • Corporate tax $ 1,780,535
