PROVIDENCE – Tech Collective, Rhode Island’s information technology and bioscience association, has a new interim executive director.

Tom Falcone previously was executive director of the Joint Committee on Legislative Services, the business arm of the state legislature, until he was laid off in 2014. He began working at Tech Collective Feb. 1, replacing Kathie Shields.

Prior to joining Tech Collective, Falcone said he completed a project in which he helped a copy machine company change its focus to become more technology-oriented. The company now provides IT services, he said.

Falcone said he was approached by Tech Collective’s interim board chairman, Phil Carlucci, about the position some time ago.
Carlucci, in a statement, said, “Tom has made an immediate positive impact and we are thrilled to have him in the role. Once the final set of programs are decided upon, Tom will be our leading candidate to fill a permanent leadership position within the organization.”

Falcone said that before he took the position, he met with some of the board members and was impressed with their determination and dedication.

“They’re laser-focused on making this an absolute success. They impressed me so much that I decided I would consider helping them out here,” Falcone said.
A press release from Tech Collective said the group has “grown dramatically over the past decade” and a search was conducted for someone with strong operational skills to step in as an interim executive director. The release said Falcone brings strong operations expertise, as well as an entrepreneurial spirit to Tech Collective.

Shields, who could not be reached for comment, had been in the top position at Tech Collective since 2006.
