PROVIDENCE – The Tech Collective hopes to interest 90 middle school girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with its inaugural STEM in the Middle workshop.

The seminar, consisting of 10 workshops, will take place at The STEM Center at Rhode Island College – Alger Hall, Room 110 – on Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eight educators from Providence’s Sophia Academy and TIMES² Academy will be present as well as 15 industry professionals.

“The level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate from high school than anything that actually happens academically in high school,” the Tech Collective said in a news release, citing a recent report “Engaging the STEM Intermediate Student with Technology.”

The event is modeled after Tech Collective’s annual GRRL Tech event for high schoolers, which will take place in March. The workshops will range from biotechnology and DNA, forensics, mathematics, computer repair, science, electronics and multimedia.

Students will attend two workshops and have lunch with industry professionals.

Separately, the Bay View Academy hosted its first annual Women in Science & Engineering Conference on Nov. 19 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where 200 sixth, seventh and eight grade girls from local schools were able to attend STEM-related workshops.
