A PBN SPECIAL SECTION: 2011 BEST PLACES TO WORK

These employers connect to their workers directly

Posted:

Would that we all could be employed at one of the Best Places To Work. And the way things are going, it may happen sooner than you think.

This year’s version, the sixth sponsored by Providence Business News and conducted by The Best Companies Group, continues the growth we have seen since the first competition in 2006. Fifty-eight companies applied for the honor – which is judged by Best Companies based on a survey of workplace policies and benefits, then validated by extensive and confidential employee surveys – and 40 were judged to be worthy of recognition.

And one note. While each category is ranked – the process does produce a numerical score – just making it onto the list is a triumph for each company. So no one should be sad to come in near the bottom of a category ranking. Every company profiled in this special section is a great place to work.

Reading the stories in this section, I am struck by a few commonalities. The best companies make it a point to help employees strike a balance between the demands of the workplace and home life. Where appropriate, they put compensation policies in place that make it clear each worker has some skin in the game. And lastly, they do more than give lip service to “empowerment.” These companies engage, solicit opinions and then listen to their staffs, making changes that benefit the company, sure, but just as importantly, they make the workplace somewhere that demonstrably values the workers, which in turn makes them more engaged and productive.

As is always the case, PBN could not conduct its recognition programs without the help of sponsors. This year’s sponsors include Collette Vacations, Cox Business, the Society of Human Resources Management, Tufts Health Plan and USI-Mastors & Servant Insurance. The media sponsor is WPRV-AM 790.

And for those of you looking to join this august company, take what you read in this section and put it into practice. I’d love nothing more than to report even more Best Places To Work in 2012. •

Sincerely,

Mark S. Murphy
