PROVIDENCE – Three Rhode Island public schools have been honored as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.
The federal agency honored Barrington Middle School, Fort Barton Elementary School in Tiverton and Stephen Olney Elementary School in North Providence, said Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of elementary and secondary education in a statement Wednesday.
“Thanks to visionary leadership, strong community and family engagement, excellent classroom instruction and a commitment to continuous improvement, these schools demonstrate that all students can learn and achieve at high levels,” Gist said.
Gist singled out Barrington Middle School for school-wide proficiency rates and rates for student groups that she said are among the highest in Rhode Island secondary schools.
The other two schools made “significant progress in closing achievement gaps while maintaining very high school-wide proficiency rates in both mathematics and reading,” she said.
