Thumbtack: R.I. fourth-most expensive state to get married

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the fourth-most expensive state to get married, according to Thumbtack, with an average cost of $15,233.
The consumer service website said the most expensive state to get married is Connecticut, where the average cost is $17,211, followed by New York at $16,305. Washington, D.C., was included and placed third on the list at $15,835. Pennsylvania was fifth at $14,722.
Thumbtack said the average American couple will spend $12,189 on essential wedding services in 2016, excluding the venue, dress and rings, for a wedding with 98 guests on average.

The Providence metropolitan area also ranked as the fifth-most expensive metro area to get married with an average cost of $13,990. The New York City metro area topped that category with a cost of $16,077.
Thumbtack released the wedding cost information as part of its Thumbtack 2016 Wedding Trends Report. The company said that it receives more than 320,000 wedding requests each year, and looked at wedding requests placed for 2016 weddings, uncovering upcoming trends and spending habits, for the study.
The study found that weddings in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic tend to be the most expensive, with the higher cost driven by formal dinners and a large number of guests.
Thumbtack also said the average couple will spend approximately $2,000 more this year on wedding costs, with much of that going toward a more upscale dinner experience. Formal receptions also are on the rise, with a 26 percent increase in couples requesting servers for their receptions, as well as larger cakes, with a 55 percent increase in couples asking for three-layer cakes compared with last year.
