Tiverton says no to outlet shops

TIVERTON – The Town Council closed the door on outlet shopping in the Industrial Park.

Council members voted to reject a new, smaller proposal by Legacy Development of Kansas City, Mo., to build a shopping plaza on 108 acres in the site, The Herald News reported Aug. 15.

Legacy’s latest proposal, its third sent to the town, called for a 225,000-square-foot shopping plaza dedicated to 15,000- to 35,000-square-foot outlet stores.

Legacy would also not request a tax-increment-financing agreement with the town, which would have delayed the implementation of higher taxes on the property, according to the proposal.

Legacy’s initial proposal was for a 550,000-square-foot plaza, possibly with a hotel, and restaurants. •
