To some, telecommuting trumps marriage

SAN FRANCISCO – According to a survey, 5 percent of Americans would divorce their spouse to be able to telecommute.

The online survey was taken by Harris Interactive from Jan. 12 to 16 of 2,630 adults in the United States. It was funded by TeamViewer, a company founded in 2005 that provides remote control and online meeting software.

“TeamViewer found that Americans would be willing to sacrifice a lot of things in order to telecommute,” it said in a statement released ahead of Valentine’s Day. Twelve percent of respondents said they would be willing to give up daily showers in favor of telecommuting.

Those sacrifices include: social media, 34 percent; texting, 30 percent; chocolate, 29 percent; smartphone, 25 percent; shopping, 20 percent; a salary increase, 17 percent; and half of vacation days, 15 percent.

The majority of participants, 83 percent, also said they believe telecommuting is on the rise.

“While the results of this survey may seem amusing, these findings show that telecommuting will be a force to be reckoned with in the future,” said Holger Felgner, general manager at TeamViewer.
