Toray debuts new metal transfer film, Lumirror MR20

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Toray Plastics (America) Inc. has introduced a bright, new, environment-friendly metal-transfer film that can be returned to the company for recycling after it has been converted.

The new film, Lumirror MR20, creates a “brilliant reflective surface” for premium decorative packaging, point-of-purchase displays and specialty printing applications, the manufacturer said.

“Efficient, eco-friendly metal-transfer film manufacturing and luxurious-looking, recyclable packages and printed items are no longer mutually exclusive,” Milan Moscaritolo, senior director of sales and marketing, Lumirror Polyester Film Division, said in a statement recently.

Moscaritolo said the film helps “turn an ordinary-looking, mass-produced packaged good or printed item into something extraordinary. In addition, the environmental benefits are substantial.”

Made in-house using the company’s proprietary film formulation and metallization process, Toray said the Lumirror MR20 polyester metal-transfer film allows vacuum-deposited aluminum on the film surface to be transferred with adhesive to paper and paperboard for superior brightness.

Traditional metal-transfer films require several steps and usually require a longer supply chain, the company said.

The new film can be used in packaging for cosmetics, personal care items, specialty food items, confections, pet food, alcohol, sporting goods and toys, as well as printed materials.
