PROVIDENCE – Newly nestled in the city’s Fox Point neighborhood, Persimmon was named Rhode Island’s top eco-friendly, farm-to-table restaurant in a list of each state’s best locavore restaurant by Travel + Leisure.

Results were garnered through the travel and lifestyle magazine’s research, as well as local food bloggers and experts. When it came to the Ocean State, T+L turned to Michele Meek, author of The Rhode Less Traveled.

For its “fiercest commitment to local [and] sustainably sourced ingredients,” T+L gave Persimmon, run by three-time James Beard semi-finalist Champe Speidel, top marks among Rhode Island restaurants.

“Though the locavore mentality will remain, Speidel plans to expand on the signature chef’s tasting to include 20 to 25 daily dishes in various categories such as vegetables, pasta and grains, meats and game, fish and seafood, and dessert,” wrote T+L.

As for the runners up, T+L added: “Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but it has one of the greatest farm-to-table restaurant scenes in the country.”

Top honor in Connecticut went to Back 40 Kitchen in Groton, led by George DeMarsico, executive chef. Cambridge-based Clover Food Labs, called “a food truck-turned fast-casual vegetarian spot” by T+L, won top farm-to-table restaurant in Massachusetts.
