WARWICK – More travelers are looking to postpone or cancel international trips after the worldwide travel alert issued by the U.S. Department of State, travel insurance aggregator InsureMyTrip reported Thursday.

The State Department issued a travel alert Aug. 2, citing “continued potential for terrorist attacks,” especially in North Africa and the Middle East. Dozens of U.S. embassies and consulates in the region have been closed until at least Saturday, and the travel alert will remain in effect until Aug. 31.

“Travel safety is always our top priority, and the InsureMyTrip customer care center is closely monitoring this situation and working to best assist travelers,” InsureMyTrip CEO Jim Grace said in a statement. “Americans are clearly heeding the warnings issued and re-evaluating travel plans in response to this latest terror alert.”

Grace noted that many are taking extra precautions even on trips after the alert expires.

InsureMyTrip recommended that travelers seeking insurance plans should look into Cancel For Any Reason options, which allow cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.

The site also recommended travelers register with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security updates and make contact easier with the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy.
