JOHNSTON – Tri-Town Community Action Agency recently received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to grow its dental programs and increase the number of patients it serves.
Tri-Town was created in 1964 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and serves individuals and families in need within North Central and Northwestern Rhode Island.

Tri-Town’s chief operating officer, Brenda Dowlatshahi, said that the grant will permit earlier, and better, treatment of people in need.

“When people cannot see a dental provider, they do not receive the preventive services and early diagnosis and interventions that can halt or slow the progress of most oral diseases,” Dowlatshahi said. “This funding will allow Tri-Town to hire more dental care providers, expand hours of service, and renovate existing facilities to add new exam rooms and operatories.”

Under the terms of the grant, Tri-Town will contribute $200,000 of its own funds to expand its dental program.

In its grant application, Tri-Town said that more than 90 percent of its adult clients have income below $40,000 per year for a family of three and that 92 percent of children in its Head Start program are covered by Medicaid but typically do not get the dental care they need because of a lack of providers.
