PROVIDENCE – Trinity Repertory Company will be one of 22 Theatre Communication Group theater members to participate in the newly launched Blue Star Theatres program, which – in partnership with Blue Star Families – provides free or discounted ticket programs to military families.

“The Blue Star Theatres program is a natural extension of the Obama administration’s Joining Forces program, which focuses on helping military families with initiatives like hiring more military spouses and enhancing academic opportunities for students in military families,” Sen. Jack Reed said in prepared remarks.

“These types of programs remind our troops and their families how much we value and appreciate their service to our nation,” added Reed.

The program also will offer military families community discussions on resonating plays, workshops and playwriting classes, job postings and casting notices on military bases.

The Blue Star Theatre program will build upon the Blue Star Museums program, started three years ago, which offers free or reduced summer admissions for military families and veterans in all 50 states and has grown to over 1,880 participating museums.

That program was launched by Blue Star Families in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

“We are thrilled that [Theatre Communication Group] and the theater community have also been inspired to work with Blue Star Families in order to answer the First Lady and [Vice President Joseph] Biden’s call to help give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned,” said Rocco Landesman, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts in a statement.

In addition to Trinity Rep, American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. is offering the program in the New England region.

Blue Star Families is a national nonprofit network of military families across all ranks and services that works to raise awareness of the challenges and strengths of military family life.

The theater program is being supported by Theatre Communications Group, a national organization for theatre, and the Met Life Foundation, which focuses on strengthening communities through grants in, among other areas, civic affairs and culture.
