PROVIDENCE – More than 3,700 people contributed more than 38,000 gifts to help the Trinity Repertory Company reach its $18 million comprehensive capital campaign, theater leaders said Friday.

The contributions already have enabled the theater to expand personnel and programming and make capital improvements.

Now in its 51st season, the theater bills itself as the last permanent resident acting company in America, and presents world premiere, contemporary and classic works for an estimated audience of approximately 145,000 a year.

Board chairperson Suzanne Magaziner, who referenced the contributions, called the fundraising a “true community effort.” Curt Columbus, the Richard L. Bready artistic director, also thanked supporters.

“What made working on this campaign special was seeing the wide range of people that made contributions of all sizes towards our final goal,” Magaziner said. “That’s a really staggering demonstration of what Trinity Rep means to this community, and on behalf of the board, the campaign steering committee, and Trinity Rep, I offer an immense thank you to every person that gave to this campaign.”

The campaign was launched more than six years ago but increased from $12 million to $18 million in 2011.

The success of the campaign, named the Theater for Every Generation campaign in 2010, has already allowed Trinity Rep to hire three new resident acting company members, expand education and artistic staff, and highlight the work of resident acting company member Joe Wilson Jr., the theater said in a press release.

Recently, Wilson was awarded the TCG/Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship for Distinguished Achievement.

The theater also has expanded professional development for resident company members, broadened educational program offerings, and attracted national funding from the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, enabling the theater to commission more than 10 new plays.

Campaign funds also made possible upgrades to the theater’s technology systems, the launch of a new website, a new HVAC system, fire code upgrades, and a new roof for the Lederer Theater Center.
