Tufts Health gives $110K to four R.I. groups

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Tufts Health Plan Foundation has awarded a total of $110,000 to four Rhode Island organizations as part of its $2.8 million in grants distributed to nonprofit groups, foundation officials announced on Nov. 28.

  • Best Buddies Rhode Island of Cranston received $20,000 for its Intergenerational College Project. Best Buddies seeks to build friendships that bridge the gap between older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the communities in which they live by having the adults interact with college students from Brown University, Providence College, Salve Regina University and the University of Rhode Island.

  • Mount Saint Rita Health Center of Cumberland received $5,000 for the Blessings in a Back Pack Program. This program provides weekend nourishment to at-need school children. Each school week, about 250 backpacks are stuffed with light-weight, healthy, nonperishable and easy-to-prepare foods. The backpacks are then sent home every Friday to students that would otherwise go hungry.

  • Bethany Home of Rhode Island in Providence received $43,036 for its caregiver support program, designed to help to meet the needs of “at home” caregivers for the elderly.

  • Westbay Community Action of Warwick received $42,000 for the Elder Safety Project. The project hopes to reduce the occurrence of falls or lessen the long-term impact of falls through a series of 12 informational workshops open to all Kent County elders.
