WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Tufts Health Plan Foundation awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to 46 Massachusetts and Rhode Island-based organizations in its first cycle of funding for 2012.

Five Rhode Island-based organizations – Family Service of Rhode Island, the Greater Providence YMCA, the Rhode Island Free Clinic, The Providence Center and Cornerstone Adult Services – were among the recipients.

Family Service of Rhode Island was awarded $44,992 to support a community-based approach to meeting the Ocean Stat’s growing population of aging adults with HIV/AIDS. The money will support instructor led fitness trainings and a series of other wellness topics related to this population.

The Greater Providence YMCA received $45,000 to support multiple programs including an eight-week workshop to reduce the risk of falling called Matter of Balance, the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program and the Healthy Lifestyles Program.

The Rhode Island Free Clinic was awarded $70,000 to offer activities to patients 60 and older to support improvements in chronic disease, behavioral health management, mobility, independence and overall quality of life.

The Providence Center received $52,211 to serve older adults with behavioral health problems including mental health, substance abuse or both.

Finally, Warwick-based Cornerstone Adult Services was awarded $11,150 to expand its fall prevention program to include the Nancy Brayton Osborn Adult Day Health Center in Little Compton.

“It is a pleasure to continue this great work for the older adults in our communities” said David Abelman, president of the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, said in a statement. “Having been a part of these foundation grants for many cycles I am humbled by the continued commitment of our community organizations to help and enhance the lives of seniors.”

According to a release, this summer marks the fourth year of the Tufts Health Plan Foundation’s healthy aging program. Since the program’s inception in 2009, the foundation has awarded nearly $9 million in grants.
