25 R.I. communities to share $12.9M in affordable housing funds

PROVIDENCE – U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed said 25 Rhode Island cities and towns will share nearly $12.9 million in federal funding to develop, improve and finance public housing in their communities.

Grants are awarded to Public Housing Authorities through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Public Housing Capital Fund Program, according to a news release from Reed’s office.

“This federal funding will help Rhode Island housing authorities preserve affordable housing, build stronger neighborhoods and put more contractors to work making necessary repairs,” Reed said in a statement on Tuesday. “It is important that we do everything we can to reduce poverty and homelessness and help local housing agencies make much-needed improvements to preserve their aging housing stock.”

The Public Housing Capital Fund enables housing agencies to maintain, improve and preserve housing stock to ensure families are not displaced, the release said.

“Lack of affordable housing is an issue in communities across the state and the nation.
