TIVERTON – The Twin River Management Group on Tuesday night unveiled preliminary plans for a proposed casino here that would replace Newport Grand in Newport.

The preliminary designs were shared with the Tiverton Town Council at the start of its 7 p.m. meeting, and includes two concepts – a casino with and without a hotel, according to an embargoed Power Point presentation. Two possible styles are proposed – one that is “library-inspired” and a “Newport Shingle” style.

In July, TRMG completed its acquisition of Newport Grand, which has 1,100 slot machines while Twin River has 4,500 slot machines and 80 table games. In April, the company said it would seek to move the Newport Grand gaming license to a new site in Tiverton.

If various approvals are obtained, the earliest the gaming license could be transferred would be mid-2018, the presentation states.

According to a timeline included in the plans, by Nov. 9, TRMG could deliver a “definitive” proposal to the Town Council that includes details on environmental, market, economic impact and traffic issues.

It would be up to the Town Council to consider putting the matter to a town-wide vote. The General Assembly would determine whether to draft legislation to put the issue to a statewide vote on the November 2016 ballot, said spokeswoman Patti Doyle.

There have been 36 community meetings and three September charrettes to date.

TRMG does not yet have estimated construction costs, Doyle added.
