Twin River, police donate bikes

LINCOLN – Twin River Casino and local law enforcement agencies have donated refurbished bicycles reclaimed from lost or stolen coffers or employee basements to the community for the holidays.
“Project Broken Wheel” has provided a dozen bikes to the Bristol Good Neighbor Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry in Riverside, and the Praise Tabernacle Church in Cranston. Ten more bicycles were donated to Adoption Rhode Island, located in Providence. And the casino delivered two bikes to the Family Literacy Center in Manville.
All told, more than 600 bikes have been donated through the collaboration over the years, said Frank Martucci, Twin River’s general manager of beverage operations. He has led a team comprised of Twin River employees and local hospitality industry friends and volunteers in the effort.
“We take parts from each of the broken bicycles in order to make them whole again,” said Martucci. “Our employees really pulled together and were able to bring smiles to so many little faces this holiday season.”
Although Twin River employees have already adopted five families in need within Blackstone Valley this holiday season, employees were happy to add this task to the list of gift-giving activities, said Kim Ward, Twin River’s director of public and community affairs.
“We had an abundance of bicycles donated from the local community and many of our employees brought in their old bicycles that were cluttering up their garage or basement,” she said.
