Two Mass. AG officewomen honored for their advocacy work

BOSTON – Two female members of Attorney General Martha Coakley’s team have been recognized for making “meaningful and inspiring contributions in the fields of social justice and advocacy.”

Maura Healey, chief of Coakley’s Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau, and Hélène Kazanjian, chief of the AG’s Trial Division, were honored this month at Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s Top Women of Law Event. Healey and Kazanjian were among 50 women recognized for making professional strides and accomplishments in private practice, the corporate arena and social advocacy.

According to a news release, Healey served for five years as chief of the Civil Rights Division in the Massachusetts attorney general’s office before assuming her current position in February. Healey led the commonwealth’s successful challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act in Federal District Court in July 2010 and recently presented the commonwealth’s case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Kazanjian has served for two years as the chief of the Trial Division within the office’s Government Bureau. She served for 19 years as an assistant U.S. attorney, handling civil and criminal cases in Washington, D.C., and Maine.

Kazanjian received many accolades for her work at the federal level, being awarded the Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an assistant U.S. attorney in 2004, the Inspector General’s Integrity Award in 2003 and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Prosecutorial Award in 2002. •
