Two R.I. high schools named on Newsweek’s top list

NEW YORK – Providence’s Classical High and East Greenwich High School made Newsweek Magazine’s annual list of the top 1,000 high schools in the country.

Classical earned the No. 411 spot with a 99 percent graduation rate and 95 percent of its graduates heading off to college.

The average combined SAT score for a student at Classical was 1578 and the average ACT score was a 31.

East Greenwich High School, which ranked No. 824 on the list, boasted a 96 percent graduation rate and 88 percent of its graduates heading to college.

The average combined SAT score for an East Greenwich High student was 1703 and the average ACT score was a 25.6.

Comparatively, the Bowling Green, Ky.-based Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science, which earned the top spot on Newsweek’s list, boasted both a 100 percent graduation and college-bound student rate and an average combined SAT score of 2010.
