Two Tufts health plans given 5-star ratings by NCQA

PROVIDENCE – Seven private commercial and Medicaid health insurance plans active in Rhode Island received 4.5 out of five stars or higher in the 2016-2017 National Committee for Quality Assurance ranking, according to the NCQA report.

The annual ranking, which was broken down into private commercial plans and Medicaid plans, listed both Tufts’ PPO and HMO as five-star coverage. Its Medicaid plan received 4.5 stars from NCQA.

Tufts PPO plan is the only such plan in the nation to receive five out of five stars by the rating organization.

In a statement, Tom Croswell, Tufts Health Plan president and CEO, said: “We strive to deliver superior, high-value health plans to the diverse communities we serve. These outstanding ratings are the culmination of hard work performed across our entire organization.”

This year’s findings mark the 12th consecutive year Tufts Health Plan’s private plans have been ranked among the highest in the country by NCQA and the 7th consecutive year for the company’s Medicaid plans.

Each of the following companies received 4.5 stars in the private commercial category: Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (PPO), UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (PPO) and United Healthcare Services Inc. (PPO).
Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island (HMO) and UnitedHealthcare of New England Inc., Medicaid Managed Care Operations (HMO) received the same distinction in the Medicaid category.

In addition, the private commercial plans from Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company Rhode Island and Connecticut General Life Insurance Company Rhode Island received 3.5 stars while the Aetna Life Insurance Company’s Rhode Island private commercial garnered three stars.

NCQA bases its ranking of 500 private commercial plans and nearly 200 Medicaid plans on consumer experience, prevention and treatment.
