During the 13th annual Celebrity/Scholarship Dinner held for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Center for Marketing Research, 22 students each received scholarships in addition to some encouraging words from former New England Patriots player, Ty Law.
Law, who announced that he would be donating $5,000 for future scholarships, took the stage during the dinner to reveal some of the personal challenges he faced while growing up in Aliquippa, Pa. During his youth, he said, drugs were prevalent and impacting his family. Law said he knew that sports could help him attain a better life, so he took up football and basketball and excelled in both. Law eventually became a cornerback for the Patriots, spending a decade with the team and winning three Super Bowl titles.
He told students to “face their challenges and move forward,” calling these “life lessons that help you shape the rest of your life.”
The dinner was held at Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea where graduate and undergraduate students were presented with $500 or $1,000 scholarships. To date, the Center for Marketing Research has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to UMass Dartmouth students.
