DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is planning to relaunch and re-brand its innovation incubator in Fall River on Oct. 23.

Currently named the Advanced Technology Manufacturing Center, the tech-business incubator has launched more than 20 companies since opening in 2001.

On Oct. 23, the incubator will become known as the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Under its new mission, the center will expand its outreach to southeastern Massachusetts entrepreneurs, including those among the faculty and students at UMass Dartmouth.

“We were a university incubator that looked off-campus, to the region, for entrepreneurs,” said Director Toby Stapleton, “but now an equal emphasis will be put in fostering the entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus. We focus on manufacturing and life sciences, so it’s pretty exciting to think about how we get more entrepreneurs on campus.”

The relaunched incubator not only will continue to bring in startups for development, but also will serve as a “virtual incubator,” providing services to startups located throughout the region to accelerate their growth.

At the relaunch, UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman will be accompanied by Mass. Sen. Michael Rodrigues, D-Westport; Mass. Rep. Paul A. Schmid III, D-Westport; Fall River Mayor Sam Sutter; and Stapleton, as well as leaders of startup companies and local businesses.

The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at 151 Martine St. in Fall River.
