UMass begins meeting on 10-year strategic plan

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth launched a long-term strategic planning process aimed at plotting the school’s course for the next decade.
Known as UMASSDTransform2020, the process kicked off on May 14 with a daylong meeting of a 40-member committee assembled to focus on the future mission, vision, strategic goals and priorities of the university.
The committee, which is expected to take nine months to complete its work, includes the university’s deans, as well as members of the chancellor’s cabinet, faculty and student representation, as well as representatives of the regional business community.
Chancellor Divina Grossman said the process is meant to position the campus to “meet the needs and aspirations of the community and commonwealth at a time of accelerating change in the higher education environment.”
Provost and Chief Academic Officer Mohammad Karim will lead the process, with Vincent Omachonu, an associate professor of industrial engineering at the University of Miami, facilitating the work.
The project will end with recommendations for addressing academic-program development, student services, revenue enhancement, enrollment, research and community engagement. A 10-year facilities plan will also be developed. •
