UMass chemistry department lands $339K NSF funding

DARTMOUTH – Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s department of chemistry and biochemistry received a $339,000 award from the National Science Foundation, the school announced Thursday.

The major research instrument award will fund the acquisition of a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer for the department, a piece of equipment that is the primary means of characterizing chemical structures.

According to a release from the university, the spectrometer “represents a big step forward in the department’s ability to perform research, train students and attract new faculty.”

The award, which will help the department study areas ranging from botulism antidotes to the health effects of cranberries, was granted under the leadership of principal investigator Maolin Guo and co-PIs David Manke, Catherine Neto, Emmanuel Ojadi and Sivappa Rasapalli.
