UMass creates $500K scholarship fund for SouthCoast students

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts has created the James J. Karam Scholarship Fund for SouthCoast students to attend any UMass campus, in honor of the UMass Dartmouth graduate.
“No university has ever had a stauncher advocate than … Jim Karam,” said UMass President Robert Caret, in a statement. “Jim fought for students, fought for excellence, fought for affordability, and fought for the basic notion that we as a society need to provide high-quality institutions that transform lives and move us forward in social and economic terms.”
The $500,000 scholarship fund includes a $100,000 gift from Karam and was created by contributions from Karam’s friends, business associates and UMass colleagues.
Karam served on the board of directors for a decade before stepping down last year.
“The University of Massachusetts changed my life and now does me the great honor of creating a scholarship fund in my name that will change the lives of others,” Karam said in a statement. •
