DARTMOUTH – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Professor John Buck has received a $743,000 research grant from the U.S. Office of Naval Research to help improve sensor arrays for sonar systems.

The five-year project, which is titled “Co-Prime Sensor Array Signal Processing,” will be conducted in collaboration with George Mason University Professor Kathleen Wage.

According to a UMass release, Buck and Wage will use the funds to explore new techniques for designing arrays of underwater microphones that are smaller and more efficient.

The potential improvements of the innovation could affect: homeland security, submarine and marine mammal tracking, marine energy and mineral exploration, and finding fish, said the school’s release.

UMass also announced that two of its doctoral students recently won first and second place in the “Best Student Paper Awards” at the recent meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, which was held in November in Kansas City.
