NEW BEDFORD – During remarks to the New Bedford Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, University of Massachusetts President Robert Caret reaffirmed the school’s commitment to southeastern Massachusetts.
The university’s “public mission … obligates UMass to serve the commonwealth,” said Caret, according to The Herald News of Fall River. “Economic development and work force development are two important ways in which we bring that mission to life.”
Caret’s visit to the region came as the statewide university system is in the midst of looking for a replacement for University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack, who is retiring at the end of the school year in June.
According to The Herald News, MacCormack has made pushing the school beyond its academic mission a priority, citing the planned construction this year of a $28 million biomanufacturing center in Fall River.
