Local 5098 members of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals presented more than $10,000 in items for pediatric patients at Hasbro Children’s Hospital on June 2 to celebrate 20 years of the UNAP Children’s Hospital Fund.
Over the past two decades, UNAP Children’s Hospital members have raised and donated more than $125,000 in “extra” supplies to ease their patients’ stay. One of UNAP’s most notable contributions was little red wagons that they purchased and converted to be used as a “fun” alternative to wheelchairs.
But the fund doesn’t just purchase activity books and stuffed animals, the nurses have also made donations towards an MRI scanner, physical-therapy equipment and other materials to improve the quality of care. The fund is run entirely by Hasbro Children’s Hospital nurses who identify the needs, raise the funds, organize the events and purchase the supplies. The fund also receives significant support from the Rhode Island Hospital UNAP. •
