PROVIDENCE – United Natural Foods Inc. has acquired Gourmet Guru, a Bronx, N.Y., distributor and merchandiser of fresh and organic food.
The amount of the transaction was not disclosed. UNFI said Thursday that it was an all cash transaction.
UNFI, a carrier and distributor of natural, organic and specialty food products, said the acquisition expands the company’s presence in key urban markets, and enhances its strength in “finding and cultivating emerging fresh and organic brands.”
Steven Spinner, UNFI’s president and CEO, said the acquisition will strengthen the company’s expertise in “identifying new and fast-growing health and wellness brands.”
Gourmet Guru, founded in 1996, had $50 million in sales for the 12 months that ended June 30. The transaction is expected to be neutral to UNFI’s fiscal 2017 earnings and modestly improve UNFI’s earnings in fiscal 2018, the company said in a press release.
Spinner said Jeff Lichtenstein, Gourmet Guru’s CEO, will remain at the company in a leadership role. Lichtenstein said Gourmet Guru is proud to become part of UNFI, and it is looking forward to helping UNFI bring more products to market.
