APPLICATIONS for enrollment to the University of Rhode Island reached record numbers this year.

KINGSTON – A record 20,414 students applied for enrollment in the University of Rhode Island’s fall 2012 class, according to the school.

That number more than doubles the 10,150 applications sent in 20 years ago when the University marked its 1992 Centennial.

“We’ve really been working very hard to recruit students and enroll them,” Cynthia Bonn, URI dean of admission, said in a prepared statement. “We’ve expanded our travel territories, and we’re doing a much better job of communicating with students now via email and social media.”

The outreach efforts of the university have not gone unnoticed by potential students as freshman enrollment for the 2011-2012 entering class rose 9 percent from the previous freshman class and 50 percent compared with URI’s 1992-1993 Centennial class.

Of the 3,177 students enrolled in URI’s most recent freshman class, 26 percent of students qualified for the Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society. With an average grade point average of 3.75, 480 freshmen joined the honor society, making it one of the largest Phi Eta Sigma classes ever, according to the university.
