URI fellowships attract students from 14 colleges

NARRAGANSETT – Students from 14 colleges across the U.S. are conducting research through the University of Rhode Island’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Oceanography.
In the midst of a 10-week program, undergraduate students from such schools as Middlebury College, the University of California at Davis and Worcester Polytechnic Institute have joined projects headed by faculty and graduate students.
“This program allows us to share our enthusiasm for oceanography with undergraduate students and make them aware that training in the basic sciences or engineering is both applicable and necessary for the complex challenges facing oceanographic researchers,” said Kathleen Donohue, associate professor of oceanography and co-coordinator of the program.
About 75 percent of the more than 200 students who have participated in the program, now in its 30th year, have pursued graduate school in science, math or engineering-related disciplines. •
