URI granted $14M to create adult care program

Posted 7/20/12

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island has received a $14 million federal grant to run a new program that will provide care for cognitively challenged adults.

The grant – awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – will be formally announced Monday.

The three-year grant will be used to create a care program for adults with multiple chronic illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, to help prevent illness, emergency room visits, nursing home care and hospitalization.

It will be administered at four Rhode Island agencies, including AccessPoint RI, formerly Cranston ARC, in Cranston.

URI projects the program will save the federal government and the state slightly more than $15 million in health care costs.

HHS awarded the grant for an innovative approach to managing health care.

The program will create 31 jobs and train 226 workers over the three years.
