URI hosting weeklong girls chemistry camp

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island will host a weeklong chemistry camp for up to 40 middle school girls from April 21-25 during public-school vacation.
URI assistant professor of chemistry Mindy Levine suggested the idea because research shows that girls start losing interest in science during middle school or earlier. She has packed the camp with hands-on experiments using real-world objects, scientists in a variety of interesting careers as guest speakers and a field trip to Mystic Aquarium to dissect squid.
Levine has an extensive network of female scientist colleagues who will meet and speak with the students. The camp concludes with the science behind the Diet Coke and Mentos test. •
