SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island has appointed Naomi R. Thompson, an attorney and diversity administrator at Northeastern University, as the new associate vice president of community, equity and diversity, the school announced Wednesday.

“As we’ve outlined in our transformation goals, building a community in which every member is welcomed, supported and valued is essential to our identity and mission,” said URI president David Dooley in a statement. “I am confident that Ms. Thompson’s years of experience, organizational leadership and her passion for these issues will help us to advance this core principle University-wide.”

Thompson will lead efforts to integrate diversity, equity and community into URI’s core mission, vision and strategy. She will act as liaison for the president with the presidential councils/commissions, the Bias Incident Response Team, and diversity committees throughout the university.

Her offices include the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, Multicultural Center, Women’s Center and the school’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Center.

Thompson has been at Northeastern University since 1999, where she most recently was associate director of the school’s office of institutional diversity and equity.

“This is something I’ve been passionate about as long as I can remember,” Thompson said in a statement. “I am humbled and honored to have this wonderful opportunity.”

Prior to working in higher education, Thompson was an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County, Mass and a staff attorney for Greater Boston Legal Services.

She earned her law degree from Suffolk University and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.

Thompson will begin work at URI on Aug. 27.
