URI offers double major in green business

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island now is offering a green business double major, which it says is one of the country’s first undergraduate programs focused on green business.

The program combines majors in general business and environmental economics and is designed to be completed in four years.

“The double major gives students a competitive edge for many professional careers in the new green economy,” Emi Uchida, assistant professor of environmental and natural resource economics, said in a statement.

“The private sector needs professionals who have creative ideas and the tools to formulate corporate strategies that help businesses be both economically viable and environmentally sustainable,” added Uchida. The major debuted last fall and so far about a dozen students have enrolled.

The program is collaboration between URI’s College of Business and College of the Environment and Life Sciences, which houses the Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics.

Both colleges, according to a press release, anticipate the green business double major to become a popular program option.
