URI set to welcome 3,650 new students

PROVIDENCE – The University of Rhode Island is set to welcome students – including 3,650 new ones – back for the 2013-2014 academic year, The Associated Press reported last week.
The university announced last week that the new students include a freshman class of 3,100 and 550 transfer students.
Fifty percent of the new students are from out-of-state, with Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey contributing the most numbers of students after Rhode Island, the AP said.
URI said more students are focusing on fields in science and technology, with nursing, biological sciences, kinesiology and mechanical engineering among the top undergraduate majors.
The university says its overall projected enrollment includes 13,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students. Classes begin Sept. 4. •
