Former University of Rhode Island president Robert L. Carothers plans to retire June 30 and has been advised that he is eligible for a retirement incentive, Carothers confirmed to PBN on Thursday.

R.I. NPR reported that Carother's retirement incentive could be as much $73,000.

Carothers, 69, became URI President in 1991 and left the post in 2009. Since then, he has served as president emeritus and has taught classes in poetry and education law.

“I do plan to stay in Rhode Island, and I may offer to teach a course or two in creative writing, whether at URI or elsewhere, if the opportunity presents itself,” said Carothers who added that the university advised him that he is eligible for the more than $70,000 retirement incentive.

Carothers is widely created for helping URI to distance itself from its former party school reputation and pushing building and improvement investments. The university’s endowment funds increased from $12 million to about $89 million during his tenure, the school reports.

His wife, Jane Richmond, is URI’s Dean of University College and Special Academic Programs.
