SOUTH KINGSTOWN – University of Rhode Island President David M. Dooley will join 18 other members of a newly created academic panel to address national security issues.

Dooley was appointed by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The panel, dubbed the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council, will advise the department on matters related to: the recruitment of domestic and international students and recent graduates; academic research; campus and community resiliency; security and preparedness; and faculty exchanges.

“The formation of this council represents an important milestone toward engaging the academic community in our homeland security efforts,” Napolitano said March 1 in Washington. “Their collective expertise will be a critical asset to the department, and I look forward to working with them.”

In a news release, the university said Dooley was selected because URI has provided support in explosives research to foreign governments and domestic agencies, such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, for nearly 20 years.

URI was awarded $5.15 million from the homeland security department to launch the Center of Excellence in Explosives, Detection, Mitigation, Response and Characterization in 2008.

The council will meet on a quarterly basis; the first meeting, open to the public, is slated for March 20 in Washington. Dooley has a two-year appointment.

Other members of the panel include: Chair Wallace Loh, president of the University of Maryland, and presidents from the University of North Carolina, Northeastern University, Auburn University, the University of Minnesota, Texas A&M University, New York University, the University of Montana-Missoula, St. Augustine’s College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and others.
