PROVIDENCE – The 2012 Economic Census, the U.S. government’s official five-year measure of American business and the economy, is entering its final days of data collection.

The U.S. Census Bureau issued a statement this week to businesses that have received Economic Census forms, reminding them to respond immediately if they have not yet done so.

“In this economic climate, it is necessary to have the most accurate measure of our economy,” said the U.S. Census Bureau in the statement. “Response to the Economic Census allows us to provide exactly that.”

The Economic Census, required by law, is sent out every five years to nearly 4 million businesses, including large, medium and small companies representing all U.S. locations and industries.

Businesses that receive Economic Census forms are required by law to respond, providing a range of operational and performance data that help trade associations, chambers of commerce, analysts and government agencies with planning and business decisions.

For more information or to receive assistance in filing Economic Census forms, visit econhelp.census.gov or call 877-790-1876.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the Economic Census is sent out annually. It is sent out every five years.
