Umbilical-cord program accredited by AABB

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Blood Center’s umbilical-cord blood program, located at Women & Infants Hospital, received accreditation recently, one of only 28 such accredited programs in the United States, and one of five in New England.
In its first three years, the umbilical-cord blood program has collected some 3,000 cords, eight of which have been used in life-saving transplants.
The accrediting organization, AABB, founded in 1947 as the American Association of Blood Banks, also re-accredited the R.I. Blood Center for its blood-collection activities.
“Audits for accreditation are opportunities for finding areas for continuous quality improvement,” said Dr. Carolyn Young, vice president and chief medical officer of the blood center. •
