United Way council collects 13,000 books

UNITED WAY’S WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL staff and partners gather to celebrate the donation of more than 13,000 books for local children.
Posted 9/3/12

The Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Rhode Island collected more than 13,000 books to improve childhood literacy and increase the number of children with books in their homes.

Through partnering with local organizations and businesses, the council surpassed its original goal of collecting 3,000 books.

“The response to our book drive speaks volumes about the community’s commitment to helping Rhode Island children succeed in school and in life,” said Gertrude F. Jones, council chairperson. “It’s unacceptable that two-thirds of low-income families in our country do not have books in their homes. The success of this book drive will help thousands of children today and into the future.”

Books collected through the drive were distributed to families at 11 local back-to-school celebrations, which provided students in-need with backpacks full of school supplies. Children in attendance had the opportunity to select a book of their choice to begin building their at-home libraries.

Books were also distributed through community organizations in Westerly. •
