United Way offering free tax preparation

PROVIDENCE – United Way of Rhode Island is again offering free tax preparation sessions through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Site/Earned Income Tax Credit Initiative.
The initiative is designed to ensure working families and individuals earning less than $54,000 annually have access to free tax services. UWRI is holding free tax preparation events through March 12 in different locations throughout the state, according to a press release.
This year, however, UWRI is adding a new element to the process, implementing 2-1-1 Outreach RV, which affords Rhode Islanders the opportunity to dial 2-1-1 for more information and to schedule appointments for tax services.
“In Rhode Island, along with the new mobile events, the program features sites across the state, each community agency certified by the IRS. At each site, trained volunteers help taxpayers complete their income tax returns, many offering services in both English and Spanish,” according to the company.
UWRI has scheduled eight events in Coventry, Middletown, North Providence, Providence, Warwick and West Warwick. Last year, 11,500 Rhode Island taxpayers took advantage of the program throughout 25 municipalities resulting in the return of $17 million through credits and refunds, according to a press release.
Those interested are urged to call 2-1-1 for more information about when and where the free tax preparation sessions will be held.
