Several urban schools saw a record number of volunteers this past summer during eight service projects conducted by Serve Rhode Island. There were 561 volunteers who cumulatively donated more than 2,733 hours of service.
Employee volunteer teams from Citizens Bank, Collette Vacations, Fidelity Investments and Hasbro Inc. helped build recycling bins, paint classrooms and murals, provide landscaping and more to give the public schools a much-needed makeover.
The total value of labor plus donated materials was more than $90,000, according to Serve Rhode Island.
Although the cosmetic improvements were greatly appreciated by Baldwin Elementary School, Goff Middle School, Slater Middle School, West Broadway Middle School and Roger Williams Middle School, there is still a need for significant repair work to be done in order to improve the learning environment for students.
Since 2010, Serve Rhode Island has coordinated nearly 2,700 volunteers, who donated more than 15,000 hours of service to improve eight urban schools. •
